A Piece of My Day

1.29: The Eve of 38

Soon to be Happy Birthday to me!

These beautiful flowers arrived today – a thoughtful gift from my stepson, who lives in another state. Tomorrow, I will turn 38, and while I’m not really dreading it, birthdays now certainly do take on a different meaning than they used to.

Birthdays now seem less special than they used to. Don’t get me wrong, the people around me whom I love take care to celebrate with me. But what I mean is that, as an adult, there are some tasks which must still be done, even on your birthday…a forgotten load of laundry or a bill due that day. And so, while it might be nice to set every grown-up thing aside for one day, I find that I often can’t do that on my birthday.

That’s OK, though.

Part of what is really great about my birthdays now is that each one calls me to reflect anew on my life and the many ways in which God takes care of me. I have a wonderful family, great friends, and a fantastic dog. I have a beautiful home which is filled with memories and love. I have skills and abilities – some of which are newly acquired since the birthday before. I have education, and a desire for more learning. I have vocational hopes and dreams. And I have the three things which remain: faith, hope, and love.

And every birthday I have reminds me of how blessed I am to be alive, to live the life which I’ve been given.

I hope that your days can also be filled with reflection and thanksgiving.

Peace be upon your evening,
