A Piece of My Day

A Piece of Tuesday, 9 November 2010…

Posted on: Tuesday, 9 November 2010

I saw a great sign in front of a church today. It read: “Be forgiving in traffic, not just in church.”

Since I couldn’t safely take a photo of the sign, I photographed the inside of my car instead…the inside of my car…you know, the scene of so much UNforgiveness?

Oh, you silly church sign. How dare you convict me like this! How dare you ask me to do something difficult!

I wish I could say I’m a sweet little Pollyanna when I drive, but I learned to drive in Houston. And on the streets and highways in Houston, forgiveness don’t get you very far down the road, baby.

Austin isn’t much better. How ironic to see this sign on a day in which the drivers of Austin were particularly aggravating. Lots of trying to merge into the side of my car. Lots of swerving through traffic at high speeds. Lots of opportunities for me to be forgiving…and failing.

Until I saw that sign. All of a sudden, it hit me that I spend so much time (and energy) not forgiving others when I’m driving. It hit me that what I need to be is more forgiving of others and a lot more patient with others.

I’m grateful for the lesson given by this quippy sign today. Amen – let it be so!

Peace – and forgiveness – be upon your night!
