A Piece of My Day

A Piece of Thursday, 16 September 2010…

Close up!

So, Max really, really, really doesn’t like the camera on my new phone. I mean – really. I think the flash bugs him. I took about eight pictures of him turning his head away from the camera until I – DUH! – turned off the flash. Then, I took a couple of blurry shots of him turning away from the camera because at that point, I think he was just annoyed with the procedure. Finally, I got in his face and this picture was the result. It made me laugh – I hope it makes you laugh, too. 🙂

We celebrated Max’s 11th birthday this week (on Tuesday) with a fun meal of hot dogs, “max” n cheese, “bark”-oli salad, and “pup”cakes (my Facebook friends are already aware of this). We had a friend over, watched TV, and had a nice, relaxing evening.

The background story behind this celebration is that Max’s birthday, in recent years, has been eclipsed by the various meanings assigned to the day three days before his birthday – AKA 9/11. It’s 9/11, but it’s also the anniversary of Mom’s death. Honestly, September is difficult – the 22nd is the anniversary of my dad’s death. And so, to have a reason to celebrate – even a silly one – and to feel like celebrating at all – I’ll take it!

The other thing besides celebrating a kind of silly thing like Max’s birthday is also to celebrate the joy that he brings to our lives. This little, wonderful, funny creature has been with me through some big changes – single gal to married, losses of family members, most of seminary, etc. etc. He makes me laugh – sometimes he makes me sigh (hello, Mr. Poopy Paws) – but really, he’s such a blessing. We set routines for each other – he wakes me up between 6:30 and 7:30 every morning, and I know that anytime I put on my shoes, he’ll be chasing around, thinking that it’s time to go “to the place beyond the door” (AKA “outside”).

He’s staring at me now, from his place atop the sofa cushion. He’s staring at me with a look of wondering about just what is so interesting on that glowing screen, anyway? But soon, he’ll turn into a winky-blinky dog, and fall asleep for Nap #47 today…and…we’re there.

Peace – and blessings – be upon your night,
