A Piece of My Day

A Piece of Sunday, 12 September 2010…

"Beeah heeah!"

Yes – those are a bunch of beer bottles. Yes, they are filled and capped. Yes, these tasks were accomplished by myself and Hubby S this afternoon, in our kitchen, with no broken bottles (always a fear of mine) and minimal mess (amazing).

Here’s the deal: I don’t drink beer.

I don’t like beer. Never have. Even when I was younger and beer was the (cheap) drink of choice of all my friends, I didn’t drink it. Then, as now, I hold out for something to drink which I actually enjoy drinking, even if it doesn’t contain alcohol (I mean, really, that’s OK).

So, why do I mention this?

Well, today, as I was hunched over the bucket filling these blessed bottles, my back began to cramp up and I began to feel cranky. And, to be honest, the crankiness was worse because (as I muttered to myself inwardly), I wasn’t even going to get to enjoy the fruits of these particular labors.

I sighed loudly at one point, and Hubby S noticed. I made some comment about my back hurting and not enjoying myself and enjoying it less because I knew I wouldn’t be drinking any of this blessed concoction because I wouldn’t like it, and he cheerfully commented, “Actually, out of all of them, this might be one you like!” There was a small part of me which wanted to stick a bottle you-know-where, but mostly I appreciated his effort at cheer, and appreciated more the next sentence which came out of his mouth: “Well, thank you for helping me with this.”

Now, I’m not writing this to describe what an awesome person I am, but merely to express that I learned something over the beer bottles today. And here it is: sometimes we do the thing which isn’t going to benefit us directly at all because it is helpful to someone we love, or because we know that someone we love will find great joy in the finished product.

I’ll let you know in about three weeks how the beer turned out. I will taste it, just to see. 🙂

Peace be upon your night,
