A Piece of My Day

A Piece of Monday, 2 August 2010…

Drip....drip....drip....

Our big, rainfall shower head drips. After we turn off the water, the shower head sits calmly for a while, and then usually about the time I am back in the bathroom to blow-dry my hair, the leftover water inside the head has collected on the one side, and the drip…..drip….dripping….begins.

Today, as I was in there finishing up and listening once again to the dripping, I found myself inwardly humming a chanted litany. It went something like this (helpfully pointed for those of you in the chanting mood):

L: Oh, the shower head is | dripping;

C: Mainly it’s | just annoying.

L: I should be remembering my | baptism;

C: Mainly it’s  | just annoying.

L: I should be giving thanks that I am washed in the blood of | the Lamb;

C: Mainly it’s | just annoying.

L: I should be giving thanks that I have clean and drinkable | water;

C: Mainly it’s | just annoying.

L: I should reach in there and tap it till it stops | dripping;

C: Mainly it’s | just annoying.

(Yes, really.)

Now, for me, these everyday things do call to mind the greater problems of the world. My drippy shower head is a reminder that the clean water drip….drip….dripping is something which I take for granted. We pay for that water to come out of our faucets, and – dadgum – it does. But, in certain areas of the world – maybe not as far away as I might think? – that clean water is a luxury. In certain areas of the world, the water drip….drip….dripping out of the faucets is akin to poison.

But those are not the problems which are in front of me every day. It’s the drippy shower heads, the computer which doesn’t boot up just right, the dogs barking at us through the fence, the elusive fire ants, the weeds, the miscommunications of life – these are the problems (in addition to others) which march in front of me every day! Maybe a bit of perspective, please, Self, as you complain about the things in your own life.

Back to the drippy shower head – I do often reach in and give it a tap or two in order to speed up the drip….drip….dripping process. Then, I end up with an arm covered in water – another problem to be handled. But maybe now, I can remember to remember my baptism – in which I was claimed as Christ’s own forever – and that remembering will remind me again to care about, pray for, and act upon the greater problems of the world.

Peace – and baptismal waters – be upon your day,

K
